You certainly have heard of visceral fat. Harmful fat stored in the abdominal cavity. This fat is dangerous because it surrounds vital organs such as the pancreas and liver. The more people store this fat, the more likely it is to develop serious health problems, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Here are some ways to get rid of visceral fat:
1. Don't smoke
If you smoke, you should stop. The more you smoke, the more likely you are to store fat in your stomach rather than on your hips and thighs.
2. Get enough sleep
Sleeping too little is not good. A study found adults under the age of 40 who slept five hours or less at night significantly accumulated more visceral fat.
"But too much is not good, young adults who sleep more than eight hours also add visceral fat. (This relationship is not found in people over 40 years of age.)"
3. Think of your mood
Try not to be stressed. In the Whole Nation Women's Health Study, middle-aged women who showed more hostility and had more symptoms of depression also had more visceral fat.
"In other studies, higher hormone cortisol levels were associated with accumulation of visceral fat even in thin women."
